Establishing a meaningful and enduring union with one’s soulmate is, undoubtedly, a most profound experience. Such unions are distinguished not only by sublime love, but also by their uniqueness and a transcendent sense of connection that manifests itself in myriad ways. As time unfolds, the interactions that occur within a union may resemble a dance: certain patterns of interaction become firmly entrenched, while the notes of reoccurring themes colour the ambiance between partners. Examining this “dance” between partners can yield important insights and help couples to strengthen their special bond.
A counsellor can help to illuminate the many nuances of a couple's dance with compassion, understanding and respect. Couples counselling may be used not only to address relationship issues, but also as a preventative measure that can strengthen and safeguard fledgling relationships. Couples counselling is also ideally suited for couples seeking pre-marital consultation.
The approach that I employ in my practice draws upon Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Susan Johnson, as well as the research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman. These approaches to couples counselling have a considerable amount of empirical support, and have been used successfully with couples from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
I understand that reaching out to a counsellor may seem like a daunting task. If you are thinking about couples counselling I encourage you to schedule an initial appointment to see if my style is compatible with you. During our initial meeting I will outline the process of counselling and discuss limits of confidentiality.
